Elderly more vulnerable to malnutrition
10 November 2009
A recent article on the newspaper “El Tiempo” focuses on causes and signs of malnutrition in older people. According to Dr. Isidoro Fainstein, former president of Argentina Society of Gerontology and Geriatrics, the first risk factor is solitude, to which can be added lack of resources, more costs to eat healthily, mental illnesses, reduced mobility and swallowing and dentition problems. Among clinical indicators of malnutrition there are weight loss, reduction of force, increased susceptibility to illnesses, protein deficiency and excessive lowering of blood albumin. The key is to teach older people to cook easily with cheaper and healthy food and to monitor their own weight regularly.
