Older People and Food: a Synthesis of Evidence
31 July 2009
The report entitled ‘Older People and Food: a Synthesis of Evidence’, released in 2009, is the outcome of the research done under the Food Standards Agency’s Postgraduate Scholarship Scheme, in the Unit of Social Science Research.
It is a synthesis of findings about food issues as they relate to older people, and a compilation on policy initiatives. Also, the report points out the agency’s consumer engagement activities with older customers, undertaken by the regions.
Older people are at risk of food poisoning, malnutrition and experience major transitional life events that can affect their food choices. The food behavior of older people is analysed, and issues like food hygiene, food safety and listeria are investigated.
Other than assessments on the policy implications and research gaps, the report also identifies possible external research and brings recommendations on future FSA initiatives.
The engagement activities of FSA with older people date back to 2005.
