"Q&A: Malnutrition in the UK"

08 April 2009

Channel Four News addresses malnutrition

Significant media attention has been devoted to the risks and increasing prevalence of malnutrition in the UK. Channel Four News published “Q&A: malnutrition in the UK” to address this impending health care issue including the specific signs, causes and costs of malnutrition. Channel Four cites the February 2009 BAPEN report, “Combating Malnutrition: Recommendations for Action” which disclosed that an astonishing 3 million people in the UK are affected by malnutrition, costing the nation £13 billion.

BAPEN created 25 government policy recommendations aiming to avert this trend. This includes the need to improve the food provided in NHS hospitals. With an 85 percent increase in the number of malnourished patients leaving NHS hospitals in England in the past ten years, providing patient-appropriate or simply more appetising food is imperative.
