Ensuring Good Nutrition in Europe
Today Alojz Peterle, MEP (EPP-ED) hosted a working lunch in the European Parliament in partnership with the European Nutrition for Health Alliance (ENHA). The event aimed to raise awareness of malnutrition in Europe and presentations highlighted the urgent need for action in tackling this issue.
Over 30 representatives of European NGOs, parliamentary groups, European Commission, nutrition industry, and academics attended including HOPE, European Federation of the Association of Dietitians, European Public Health Association, Alzheimer’s Europe, ESPEN and EUGMS.
Attendees heard from Prof Olle Ljungqvist (Chair of ESPEN & Co Chair of ENHA) on the need for action to tackle malnutrition and Prof Jean Pierre Baeyens (Chair of European Geriatric Medical Society & Co-chair of ENHA) on the challenge of ageing and malnutrition. Karen Williams from the UK gave a thought provoking presentation from the patient perspective demonstrating the impact malnutrition has on family, income, employment and emotional well being as well as on the treatment of illness.
The lunch was another great success for ENHA whose work has raised the profile of malnutrition in Europe ensuring it is firmly placed on the policy agenda of the European Parliament.
