BAPEN: Nutrition Screening Week

Do you want to tackle malnutrition in winter? Sign up!

Since 2007 BAPEN has organised and run a nutritional screening week across hospitals and community care settings in UK. The purpose is to create a national data bank on nutritional risks. This is the first study addressing malnutrition, using consistent criteria, based on the malnutrition universal screening tool developed by BAPEN called MUST.

The study aims to examine malnutrition rates through out the year and as such the first screening week was held in September 2007 covering autumn, while the second week, in 2008, dealt with summer. The next nutritional screening week will cover the winter season and will take place on the 12th -14th January 2010: over 3 days hospitals and care home will screen new patients to measure their level of malnutrition. In 2011 screening will take place during spring season and afterwards the data will be complied to determine any seasonal variations.

Hospitals, mental health trusts and care homes are encouraged to sign up to the initiative. The previous screenings included over 11,000 participants on a voluntary basis. The figures of 2007 and 2008 show that malnutrition in adults affects almost 1 in 3 subjects of all ages on admission to hospital and care homes and poor information was given to patients about nutritional risks.
