WELCOME
Malnutrition (meaning literally poor or bad nutrition) remains severely under-recognised in the community, in hospitals, and in nursing homes. The current focus in much of Europe is on tackling the obesity epidemic, meaning most new policy or health promotion campaigns overlook the problem of malnutrition and the extent to which it impacts the population.
Studies have shown that up to 40% of patients are malnourished upon admission to hospital and many more go undiagnosed due to inadequate screening.
Malnutrition is of particular concern in older populations. Changes associated with the ageing process mean older people are particularly susceptible to deficiencies. Malnutrition can lead to increased ill health, susceptibility to infection, delays in recovery from illness or injury and increased risk of mortality.
Poor nutrition places a significant burden on individuals and their carers and the economic impact continues to put unnecessary strain on health and social services and resources.
This website is dedicated to helping European stakeholders work with the challenges that malnutrition impose of all aspects of their society.
